Black Donnellys - Will they survive?

Black Donnellys: Complete Series at Amazon.com

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: I believe the new episodes that are airing online are available here.

UPDATE #2: According to TVguide.com the Donnellys have been canceled effective, well, NOW. Remaining episodes will be available at nbc.com.

UPDATE #1: Looks like it's been canceled, according to this post on tvguide.com.

April 16th may be its last episode. So 8 out of 13 episodes will air.

(Guess it's pointless to write up my thoughts on last nights (April 2nd) episode, which was a little better than Run Like Hell.)

END UPDATE

Checking my referrer logs, I noticed that I've been getting hits with the query "Will the Black Donnellys Survive?" and "Black Donnellys cancelled."

I think I have that answer. Yes, it will survive.

And no, it wont.

It all depends on what "survive" means.

I believe that NBC will air all 13 episodes it ordered. Someone at NBC feels strongly about this show. And despite all their attempts at making sure it fails (putting it up against CSI:Miami, very few cast interviews on the talk show circuit) someone there will keep it on. (If they didn't cancel Studio 60, this show should get a chance to find its audience.)

As for the "no, it wont" comment, I doubt that it'll be renewed next year.

I can't believe they pulled the plug on the show, I just heard / figured it out today when I watched my tape and it was that damn "thank god your here" BS. the Black Donnellys was freak'n awesome and I hope someone picks it up. At least they have shown the most resent one, online. Its only NBC show I watch besides "Heroes" and it seems like this is the last season for it too.... just they way the tv adds are going. Damn NBS for not knowing a good show when they air one.

R U Kidding me NBC!! Finally a show worth watching and you yank it from T.V. just when a refreshingly edgy network show starts budding... you have to be frickin kidding me!! I hope I am not the only one seeing red on this one... ridiculous... not like it matters, that I am ticked off... but it felt good to vent (even if watered down..smiley

csi:miami is CBS, not NBC.

And apparently David Caruso is making CBS a lot of money, so he'll be sticking around.

I think this show is really good and it has a lot of potential. Their are a lot of undiscovered good actors and so far the story line has a lot to go on. Although i am hooked personally, i think people need to give this show a chance because it could evolve into something great.

Heroes will be around for a few more years. But NBC just doesn't have many shows that I care about. I'm not into comedies, and the Law & Order stuff just doesn't interest me. ER has its moments, but next year will be the last for that show.

Friday Night Lights is good, but I lost interest in that a while ago.

No wonder NBC SUCKS! They're obviously being run by a bunch of idiots! They cancel all the good shows and only air the stupid ones. I have always loved NBC because they have such great shows, but lately, well, they suck. I can't believe they got rid of The Black Donnellys, and for what? The Wedding Crashers? Please! What a load of crap. I hope someone over at NBC falls and gets some sense knocked into their empty little heads soon, or there won't be a network left!

Yes, they can survive!

I wanted to leave this for those who aren't informed. Also visit: http://boards.nbc.com/nbc/index.php?showforum=80 and post how much you have sent, so we can keep track. Our goal is $1000.

Copied from the NBC boards.

We are giving the letter campaign a jump start, but this time instead of NBC our letter will be going to HBO. Below is an awesome letter submitted by our fellow Black Donnelly fan and board member IWATCHTHEBLACKDONNELLYS. All the information you need is included. You can copy and paste the letter, tape your quarter, sign your name and drop it in the mail. We want them to go out this Friday morning (June 1st) so that they will be recieved early next week. We ask everyone to at least try and send one letter and one quarter. For those of you that can send more, great! Lets get this done for our boys, they deserve a second season just as much as we do.

Dear Ms. Carolyn Strauss,

I am writing this letter today to express my support in bringing back the recently cancelled NBC drama, The Black Donnellys, back on the air. I know that you have played a large part in adding great series such as The Sopranos and Oz to HBO's television programming. I hope this letter will create interest for you in investing in The Black Donnellys.

I'm aware that NBC will not do much more with this series. NBC will continue to have ratings woes as they continue to alienate their viewers with bad programming decisions. I would love to see this intelligent and intriguing drama survive. I hope you would be able to help.

The Black Donnellys has acquired a tremendous and loyal fan support. We have created a "Save The Black Donnellys" campaign and believe that series would be a great fit for HBO.

We would like to show you my support for this series. Attached with this letter are shamrocks and quarters. The quarters are intended for the Manhattan Chapter - Autism Society of America.

Listed below is their contact information:

Manhattan Chapter - Autism Society of America
370 E 76th St. #C1208
New York NY 10021-2558

One of our campaign members has a child with autism. It gives me great pleasure to send you these quarters for donation to this charity. The location, Manhattan, New York, is representative of the location of where the characters of the series reside, that is in H*lls Kitchen.

I hope, as television viewers, we can shape television programming to be as interesting as engaging as it once was. The Black Donnellys has that potential.

Thank you for your time,

Well I liked the part about them airing all 13 episodes.. but I did not like the part about them not renewing it for next year.. is there any chance that NBC will decide to pick it up next year? b/c I am really loving this show.. In my opinion it is one of the best shows on tv and I would miss it so much if it ended..

david's picture

It had potential, I'll give you that.

And, Sammi, no chance. The only way it'll be on tv is if another network (probably a cable network) picks it up.

I've never watched NBC until I saw "Heroes", and I've never watched anything else on NBC besides "Heroes"...until I saw The Black Donnellys. NBC was starting to attract new viewers like myself to their lame station, and now they're like "We're pulling the plug on that one." I think that it's a bad move on NBC, and I think that CW should pick up the Black Donnellys, considering they already have the two other best shows out there (personal perspective, of course) "Smallville", and "Super Natural." Pull the plug and watch the ripple of your downfall NBC Execs. Keep the show and gain more advertising revenue and viewers.

The Save the Black Donnellys campaign has been revived in light of the recent success of Jericho fans who campaigned to get their show back on the air. We are focusing our efforts on HDNet (which will be reairing Season 1 beginning tomorrow night at smileym EST) and other cable networks (right now HBO). Please check out www.savetheblackdonnellys.net to see our most recent campaign initiatives. There's no need to register so spread the word!

What is it with american tv networks cancelling awesome shows after one or two series it is really starting to annoy me. I know this might be a bit out of date but as I am a uk watcher and the black donnellys has only recently come out on dvd over here i have just had the pleasure to watch it only to find out that the networks have decided to pull this has happened to me so many times now with shows like Invasion, carnivale, the black donnellys and it is really starting to annoy me is there nothing anyone can do to stop this.

david's picture

I've posted elsewhere here that it would be nice if the networks would commit to a new show for a set amount of episodes (a whole storyline.) And maybe even try to move the shows around in the schedule.

Black Donnellys went up against CSI:Miami, which got usually around 20 million viewers a week. (CSI:Miami might be absolute crap, but people seem to like it.) It might have actually done better on Fridays.

I'm at the point where I don't know if I want to watch high concept shows on network tv anymore. Bionic Woman is canceled. (Never really watched it, though.) Journeyman, about a guy who time travels, was a good show, but it too went up against the CSI:Miami juggernaut. And it wont be back.

I guess there's really no answer to this.

I hate it when these TV corporations cancel shows in the middle of the season without even letting the plot take off or when promising shows are cut off because they lag behind shows in the same time slot. Can't they cut these shows some slack?

grant croy's picture

These guys must be off there heads on drugs? I would love to see another show go out who makes the order for a show to be canceled he needs to be sacked he ain't doing his job/research this stuff is gold!! Feel cheated for watching it now!
