gun violence (as heard on the news today)

On the radio today during a "top of the hour" news I heard this:

A man was saying in response to the Virginia Tech murders, that President George W. Bush should do more to get guns out of the hands of criminals.

Thirty seconds later they reported that the mayor of Nagasaki, Japan, was shot dead by an organized crime boss.

Japan has strict laws against handguns. Far stricter than the US has or probably ever will.

And a political figure was shot dead there.

People who want guns will get them. No matter what.

Banning guns isn't the answer, though. Making it harder will work for most wanna-be criminals. But those dead set (smiley the pun) on getting one, will.

Maybe we should start looking at the violence around us as we try to deal with the problem logically rather than in a knee-jerk way.

Making it available hard does certainly help to curb crime.

I've lived in Japan. I feel safer here because I have a gun and can protect myself.
