emmy2007 - Battlestar Galactica

I've mentioned Battlestar Galactica a number of times in this series and I thought I should explain why.

When you think of Battlestar Galactica the first things that may come to mind are space ships and killer robots. And I won't argue that. The series takes place on space ships, and there are killer robots. (Albeit gorgeous human-looking robots.) But the show is so much more.

It's about humanity, and its struggle to survive a genocide. Those killer robots annihilated the human's world, and the humans had to flee (in space ships) to find a new home.

And the series is about that: what people have to do to survive an ordeal like that. It's about the humans, and what they're going through. It's about people. And the Emmy nominators seem to not notice that. Especially when it comes to the actors.

Battlestar Galactica does receive nominations. This year it's nominated in four categories: Outstanding Sound Editing For A Series, Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series, Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series for "Occupation/Precipice" and Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series for "Exodus, Part 2." So the technical side of the show is being seen, but not the acting which is top-notch.

Mary McDonnell plays one of the best presidents on tv, President Laura Roslin. She's always at the top of her game. Tricia Helfer plays the Cylon, Number Six. Tricia is a model, but you couldn't tell. In the second season she played a scene with herself (Tricia as a hallucination of Baltar and Tricia as a Cylon captive in a prison cell.) It was an amazing scene. And then you have the delirious Dr. Gaius Baltar played by James Callis. Those three alone should have racked up many nominations. And I don't mean to slight the rest of the cast, either. Each one brings their characters to life in a believable way.

Even though they're in a space ship being chased by killer robots.

In early 2008 the forth and final season of Battlestar Galactica will begin. Maybe 2008 will be the year that gets the show noticed.

It certainly deserves it.
