This Is My Life by Phil Vassar
I heard this song today (minus the first verse) and got a little pissed. On my first listen it sounded like one of those "my beliefs are better than your belief" songs we often hear on country radio. But as I looked over the lyrics I noticed that it wasn't really one of those songs, but rather an anti-Congress song.
Maybe it's just me, but the message of the song isn't very clear. It seems to be a "Government, get out of my life" song; politicians (Fat cats just getting fatter / Lining their pockets) intervening on the lives of the average person (and we all know that most politicians have more money than good ol' Joe Six Pack.) Then there's the line about 'Spreading the wealth around" which is not a Conservative principle. And I'm pretty sure that Phil Vasser leans a little more on the Conservative side (though I have no proof to back that statement up.)
Even though he says "Republican or democrat / Well, I don’t give a damn about that" I don't really think that's the case. Would a song like this have been released in 1995-96 during the "Contract With America"? Or before 9/11? And what's stopping him from living his life, worshiping and raising his family?
Having written all that, I feel better. This song really don't mean anything. It's not going to be one of those great political movement songs. Is there a call to action? Does he want the Republicans out of the White House? If he wants grand sweeping changes of the American political landscape, then I'm with him. But there's not a lot here and this song will probably just disappear off the charts in a month or two.
Lyrics to This Is My Life
Writer: unknown
Fat cats just getting fatter
Lining their pockets
What does it matter?
All I want is an honest wage
A piece of ground where my kids are safe
80 bucks to fill my truck
Old man telling me times are tough
Sticking it to the middle class
Well, they can kiss my price of gas
Its time to speak my mind
Hey-- this is my life
Woa – woa this is my life
Hey--yea this is my life
Woa-woa
Yea, and I want it back
Republican or democrat
Well, I don’t give a damn about that
I want a chance to do my job
Pledge allegiance to my God
Talkin’ heads trying to buy my vote
I’m just trying to pay my note
I’m a husband trying to be a father
Raise my son and raise my daughter
Can you hear me?
Hey-- this is my life
Woa – woa this is my life
Hey--yea this is my life
Woa-woa
And I want it back
Well, I’m just standing on the edge of the brink
I will not go quietly
I’ll tell you what I think
Its time to speak my peace
Squeaky wheel always gets the grease
One single voice don’t matter
But everybody’s screaming up the ladder
Gonna get the attention of the man on top
Make it louder, shake and rock
It might just come tumbling down
Spread all that wealth around
That’s what I’m talking about
Hey-ya this is my life
Woa – woa this is my life
Hey-hey-yea this is my life
Woa-woa
This is my life
This is my life

David, David, David.....you
David, David, David.....you are correct. There's no political agenda here. Just a regular guy who dislikes paying $80 to fill his gas tank, and wishes it was better out there for his kids. Just like the rest of us. Check out Phil Vassar's lyric sheets for other songs. He writes from the heart about simple things in life to which all of us can relate. Stop looking for agenda's, and appreciate it for what it is. Music. Simply music. And darn fine music at that.....
Better yet, check out a Phil Vassar concert. He ROCKS the place, and you will become an instant fan of this multitalented pianist, songwriter, and performer of some of the most refreshing music today.
Phil won't be disappearing anytime soon, I promise you that. His bio speaks for itself; full of awards and recognition from the top. This guys' on his way up to that very spot.

Well, that will be your
Well, that will be your prerogative. Neither one of us will change the other's mind. I just wanted to point out how silly I think it is that you use your own political bias as a benchmark for how good or bad this song is.
But if you want to post a lengthy reply to this, go ahead, maybe it'll give me a good chuckle, and maybe I'll find an opportunity to go and make fun of the Kennedy's some more, that never gets old. I mean, how can you get sick of pointing out how Ted Kennedy killed a woman by drowning her in his car after he drove it off a bridge, went home, relaxed for over TEN HOURS before finally deciding that maybe he has to call the cops. And yes, he gets away with it... Yah, it never gets old telling that one,
. Next time I'll tell you about another murderer in the Kennedy family. Stay tuned.

Ken,
I have a feeling that my response to your comments are going to be a bit lengthy, so I'll post a new entry addressing them this weekend (or within the week). I hope you stick around to read it.

I don't really claim to be
I don't really claim to be liberal or conservative. I think once you apply a label like that to yourself, you stop thinking. And if that makes me a liberal in your mind, you're probably a fascist. And a proud one at that. (And was that line from Michael Savage? Sounds like something he'd say.)

Wow. And to think that all
Wow. And to think that all of this political rhetoric started with a song review. Nice job staying on track guys.

Well, I guess that's what
Well, I guess that's what happens when you sing about wealth distribution. Not to mention, the so-called "song review" was just him saying that he didn't like the song until he realized it sang about a political view (socialism) that he agreed with. So the song review itself was political in nature.

I love this song! It has SO
I love this song! It has SO MUCH MEANING to me. I'm 15 years old and am in the 9th grade. I totally agree with the song and all the different points it has in it. I want to be a lawyer when I graduate high school and after attending UT for about twelve years. After being a lawyer for about three years I want to become a judge. After that, I want to become a Republican Senator of Tennessee. I agree with the line in the song that states "Republican or Democrat?" "Well, I don't give a d*** about that." I don't believe in labeling people and the only reason for me wanting to be a Republican senator is because of my belief's compared to those of Democrat's. Besides that, my parents' both consider themselves Republicans, but they do say that they would vote for who they thought would do a better job. I agree with them. Please don't think I'm judgmental.... I just wanted to speak my mind.

Wow, you actually felt
Wow, you actually felt "better" after seeing the real meaning of the song? Well, I guess you would rather the government be communist then huh? I freakin hate this song, all of this wealth distribution BS is some stupid liberal communist crap. Whenever someone tries to claim he's not either conservative or liberal, that means he's liberal. But I guess it's more like your own point of view, so therefore the song is not that bad...

Oops, "liberals love to care
Oops, "liberals love to care about the rights of criminals" is what I meant to say, not rights of liberals,
, of course they will.
Oh yah, and just a thought, but why do you think Microsoft owner Bill Gates is a staunch liberal, but will vote republican and his company donates money to the republican party? Because he knows the liberals love to tax, tax, tax, tax, tax everyone who is successful to hell. This tax affects the middle, middle-upper, and upper class. And before you say "they're rich, they can handle it" you have to realize that our economy is driven by small businesses, and small businesses are technically in the "upper class" tax bracket since they move more than $300,000 a year, doesn't mean they are rich, a lot of the money goes back into the company, but they are taxed the same way. Then there are the "fat cats" you always whine about. A lot of these rich people you see sailing around in yachts in the northeast don't have ANY income other than investments, because they HAVE all the money and got most of it through inheritance. They don't get taxed since taxing is based purely on income and not on assets. If the dems really want to "take from the rich and give to the poor" they would make the tax system based on liquid assets. The current system is killing our small businesses, large businesses, and basically anyone working for their money and leaving these rich Kennedy's in the northeast alone. Yah, speaking of Kennedy, don't you love how a party idolizes a president that came into power with the help of the mafia, and how a lot of their riches also came from bootlegging during the prohibition times? Yah, there's someone we should look up to. What a family, we have murderers, mobsters, bad drivers, bad pilots, alcoholics... Covers the whole spectrum. Ted Kennedy covers 3 of those categories, he's talented.

Yah, I'm 90% sure that makes
Yah, I'm 90% sure that makes you a liberal. Pretty typical argument a liberal would say to hide the fact. I'm conservative because on the more important issues I tend to be on the conservative side, but that does not mean I fit perfectly in a conservative "stencil." What are the important issues? Gun control, I'm a gun owner and believe in self defense. I love the police, but honestly, it'll take several minutes at least before any can arrive, you cannot depend on them to be superman and be everywhere at all times, you have to be able to fend for yourself if someone commits violence against you or your loved ones. Military and police. The democratic party generally do not support military and police as much as the republican party does. I love how there was a pay freeze during the Clinton administration and now that the dems have the house and senate, they are killing military funding like there's no tomorrow. Woot, more money for useless social welfare programs that reward people for being lazy. Criminal Justice. I believe that you commit the crime, you deserve to do the time. I care very little for the rights of criminals, but liberals love to care about the rights of liberals. So much so that they will often demonize the victim to make the criminal look less like a bad person. I HATE this, especially when the victim is dead, I hate when some liberal lawyer tries to tarnish that person's name... Then we go back to social welfare programs. I hate how it's better to be poor than to be middle class. It seems the liberals love to punish people for being successful and working hard. I love how money is taken out of my paycheck and given to these bums that have more and more children to get bigger welfare checks. I grew up going to school in poor neighborhoods, I'm pretty familiar with these types of people. But do I "stop thinking" because I call myself a conservative? Hell no, I don't follow every part that's stereotypical about that party. For one thing, I'm not at all religious, I'm agnostic. I believe fully in science and evolution. I am also pro-choice, not because I care about what problems these sluts think they have, but I feel that if a mother is willing to kill her child, she's most likely going to be a damn poor parent, and what we don't need are more little thugs being raised. Let them kill them off. Yes, I know not all people who have abortions are sluts, but my belief about their parenting skills extend to the other situations, like teenage pregnancy. I also doubt they will make good parents. Especially since a lot of times the father is nowhere to be seen in those situations. I am also not against gay rights, but I'm not for it either. I simply don't give a rat's ass. I do think they should be allowed to get married if they so choose, but don't look to me to be fighting for them any time soon... And the funny thing about people calling us fascists, the democratic party likes to take more and more rights away from us, particularly gun ownership rights, and what major government was one of the first to really enforce gun bans? Yes, that's right, Nazi Germany, because Hitler knew that citizens with guns mean citizens that can fight back against the oppressive government he was planning on running. I guess people who support gun control laws don't see this correlation yet, and don't see that guns in the hands of civilians keep the government in check. That's how we won our independence in the first place...

Well I find the song really
Well I find the song really meaningful. This song has a lot of meaning. Phil Vassar is talking about life as we know it right now according to him. And Phil is an amazing artist... He writes, plays and sings his music.

I can see where you're all
I can see where you're all coming from on the socialism aspect...but I'm going to have to disagree. I think the "spread the wealth around" line is more representing the very human desire to have as much as those who have more than you. As was already stated, Phil Vasser writes about simple things, and things that are relatively common to the human situation. So, socialism? I don't think so...more the "I just want what the other guys have for myself too"...which is something with which most people can relate.
Anyways, that's my two cents for what it's worth. I really enjoyed reading this debate.

Not the best song ever
I don't see this song lyric to be on the political right or left side, if anything probably libertarian influences. This songs is to me very vague, doesn't say anything that hasn't already been said many times. According to me a good song should not be to obvious, metaphorically lyrics like Bob Dylan is something I appreciate listening to.
